New Delhi: A disciplinary judge in Colorado on Wednesday censured Jenna Ellis, the lawyer who played an important role in the attempts made by former US President Donald Trump to overturn the 2020 US Presidential election.
Ellis, who is from Colorado, agreed with a disciplinary judge that she repeatedly misrepresented facts on social media and national television, including by claiming the presidential election had been stolen and that Trump “won in a landslide,” according to an opinion this week approving a stipulation between Ellis and the state’s top court.
According to the documents posted by Colorado’s Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel, Ellis signed a stipulation stating that various comments she made about the 2020 Presidential election violated professional ethics rules barring reckless, knowing, or intentional misrepresentations by attorneys, as reported by CNN. As a part of the stipulation, she agreed to pay $224.
The false statements highlighted in the stipulation also included the comments Ellis made on social media and during TV appearances. She claimed that Trump’s campaign had evidence that the election was “stolen”.
“The public censure in this matter reinforces that even if engaged in political speech, there is a line attorneys cannot cross, particularly when they are speaking in a representative capacity,” Jessica Yates, attorney regulation counsel for the Colorado Supreme Court, said in a statement, as quoted by CNN.
“My client remains a practicing attorney in good standing in the State of Colorado. In a very heated political climate, we have secured that correct outcome,” an attorney for Ellis, Michael Melito, told CNN. The Disciplinary Presiding judge Bryon M. Large approved the stipulation on Wednesday in an opinion post alongside the judge’s censure.
The Attorney Regulation Counsel’s office had previously given an indication of preparing a charge against Ellis, but with the announcement of the censure, the office said in a statement that it “is not currently pursuing any other charges against Ms. Ellis,” CNN reported.
Last month, Colorado’s Attorney Regulation Counsel indicated that it had been authorized to prepare and file a formal complaint against Ellis, as reported by CNN.
