6 Most Iconic Roles Played By Satish Kaushik

New Delhi: Actor and filmmaker Satish Kaushik died after a heart attack on March 9. He was 66 years old. For Kaushik, the road to the movies began over 40 years ago, when he boarded a train in Delhi for Bombay in pursuit of his passion for acting. Later in life, he spent the following three decades working as an actor, director, screenwriter, producer and comedian.

Satish Kaushik’s legacy in Indian cinema is everlasting because of his extensive body of work and styles. Today, we honour him by revisiting some of his most memorable roles:

Pappu Pager from Deewana Mastana: Playing the part of a contract assassin, Pappu Pager, Satish Kaushik received a lot of praise from reviewers and viewers alike in this David Dhawan film. The film features Govinda, Anil Kapoor, and Juhi Chawla in prominent roles. 

Calendar from Mr India: Of his many notable parts, Satish Kaushik’s role in Mr. India stands out. He portrayed Calendar, a lovable buffoonish chef whose dialogues and antics would have you in stitches. The film stars Anil Kapoor, Sridevi, and Amrish Puri at the height of his villainy.

Ashok from Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro: The dark comedy ‘Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro’ has never been surpassed in terms of brilliance. The movie is entertaining overall, Satish’s character is just priceless to watch. He not only wrote lines for the cult favourite but also performs the role of Ashok Namboodirippad.

Mutthu Swamy from Saajan Chalen Sasural: No one has to explain his comedic timing or his contributions to the pitch. This movie starred Govinda, Tabu, and Karisma Kapoor, while Satish Kaushik’s character, Mutthu Swamy, played the part of a South Indian musician. 

Kashiram from Ram Lakhan: This 1989 film starring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, Dimple Kapadia, and Madhuri Dixit Nene was the first time that Satish Kaushik was nominated for a Filmfare Award, and he won the honour for “Best Comedian” for his role in the film.

Chanda Mama from Mr and Mrs Khiladi: Do you recall Akshay Kumar’s frustration with Mama’s kisses in ‘Mr and Mrs Khiladi’? Satish Kaushik, playing Akshay Kumar’s uncle, stole the screen in this flick. The friendship between Akshay and Satish in the movie is still vivid in our memories. 

Chhatriwali, starring Rakul Preet, was the last film of Satish Kaushik. It was released in January 2023.
